Before Stardom With… Koffi Idowu-Nuel

Famous legendary entertainer Koffi Idowu-Nuel had a chat with The Punch…

How would you describe Koffi Idowu-Nuel?

I’m popularly known as Koffi Tha Guru. I am a director at COSON, the first-ever IFMA brand ambassador, a Road Safety Special Marshal, and the head of the comedy sector in the Creative Industry Group.

Can you tell us about your educational background?

I began my education at the A.D.R.A.O Nursery and Primary School, Victoria Island, before moving to Kuramo Primary School as one of its pioneer pupils. I started secondary school at Abusi Odumare Academy but completed it at Molusi College, Ijebu Igbo, Ogun State.

I later gained admission to study Chemistry at the University of Lagos, after a brief stint studying French.

How did you discover your creative talent as a comedian?

I’ve always been playful, talkative, and a natural orator since childhood. My friends often asked me to MC at neighbourhood parties. By the time I got to the university, I started exploring more opportunities in arts. A friend eventually introduced me to Theatre 15, where I honed my skills as an actor, public speaker, stand-up comedian, and writer.

Have you had any unpleasant experiences as a comedian or in your career?

Not really. The only issue I’ve faced is people trying to steal my intellectual property, but I chose not to make a fuss about it.

Aside from comedy, what other things are you involved in?

I’m Africa’s most versatile entertainer and the only Nigerian comedian with awards in stand-up comedy, MC, music, movies, and animation.

I’m a trained thespian, comic, writer, playwright, author, singer, director, and producer. I’ve released over 30 music albums, 20 movies, and two books.

Which of your comedy roles brought you fame?

My breakthrough came from playing the character ‘Dauda’ on the TV show Twilight Zone in the early 2000s. That role was my first major step into the limelight and remains one of the most recognisable characters I’ve portrayed.

How has being in the spotlight changed you?

I have remained the same despite the fame. I still have the same childhood friends and maintain a humble profile. I am not the type for the spotlight. I am an introvert who got into the limelight.

Do your female fans sometimes give you the ‘green light’?

That would have been a long time ago. Since I got married in 2008, every ‘true’ fan has been very respectful of my status.

What projects are you currently working on?

I have been working on the Ashny brand for the past few years and recently released her new album, Femme Fatale, along with two new EPs, H.O.E. and Ashny Swings Her Hips. I have been on tour in the US on several comedy trips and released a movie shot in Texas called Destination Dallas. I am set to release The Delivery Guy, also shot in Arlington, Texas.

Another movie set for release is An Area Boy, starring Femi Durojaiye, Adeniyi Johnson, Bimbo Thomas, Jude Chukwuka, Bukola Thomas, Yinka Akinlawon, and Ijeoma Imoh. It also introduces a crop of new talents, including Mario Omasoro and Ashny, with cameo appearances by Segun Adefila and Puffy Tee.

Where do we see you in the next two years?

Anywhere God takes me. I take my progress one step at a time.

Do you have any advice for upcoming comedians or young people in general?

Stay true and original.
