The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Place Of Peace parish, on Sunday, 8 October, 2023, in commemoration of Nigeria’s independence celebration, hosted a special program called “Rep Your Tribe,” where members were encouraged to dress in traditional clothing from their tribe or culture. The event was a celebration of diversity of culture in Nigeria and a way for members to learn more about each other’s heritage.
The program was organized by Pastor Femi Aluko, the Pastor in charge of the parish, who wanted to find a way to bring people together from different backgrounds. He said, “The church administration wanted to create an event where people could be reminded of how united were as a nation. Growing up as a yoruba man, who lived in a yoruba land, we had the Northern herdsmen cohabitate with us and we were never scared of being hurt and neither were they”. “It’s very important now to remind ourselves of our unity as divisiveness we experience in our nation now will take us no where” he added.
The event was a huge success, with members of all ages participating. Children wore traditional clothing from their parents’ home countries, while adults wore clothing from their own tribes or cultures. There was a wide variety of colors and styles represented, and the atmosphere was festive and joyful.
Yourba, the winning tribe (based on originality of their presentation), went home with cash prize and award plaque, the Niger Delta came second, while the Igbo tribe came third. Both second and third also went home with cash prizes.
The “Rep Your Tribe” program was a great success, and it helped to bring the church community together. It was a reminder that we are all different, but that we are all united by our shared humanity.
